All Senior School students have their own Apple MacBook laptop computer and have access to the Internet. While this provides them with an unlimited supply of resources, information and research tools, the information they access must be approached in a responsible and respectful manner.
When students use computers and related technologies they must abide by all school rules, including the Code of Ethics. Any actions performed or initiated through the computer network must reflect the honesty, respect and integrity that are an integral part of day-to-day life at The Study.
Please carefully review the policy outlined below:
1 - Access to the Internet must be related to, and in support of, the research and educational goals set out by the staff at The Study. First Class is the only e-mail communications system approved for use at The Study. 2 - Transmission of any material in violation of government regulations is prohibited. This includes: copyrighted material and anything that is threatening, racist or obscene. 3 - Students must not alter, add to or delete application files on the hard drives of any computer. 4 - Accessing the accounts and files of others is prohibited. 5 - The improper use or distribution of information resulting in copyright violations, software piracy, or plagiarism is prohibited. 6 - The following network etiquette must be adhered to at all times:
- Be polite. Never be abusive or offensive in messages to others. Do not swear or use inappropriate language in any communications and do not send offensive pictures.
- Use appropriate grammar.
- Be aware that e-mail is not necessarily private. People who operate the system have access to all mail and may report illegal activity to the appropriate authorities.
- Music from the Internet may not be downloaded or played without the express permission of a teacher. 7 - When printing documents, students are encouraged to include a “header”, with their name, time and date. They should only print when necessary and always confirm which printer they are using before printing. Students who overuse the printers may have their privileges revoked. This is intended to keep wasteful printing to a minimum. 8 - To avoid computer damage, food and beverages must not be consumed anywhere near a computer. Students should refrain from using their laptop when eating in the lunchroom. 9 - Students must never reveal personal information such as addresses, telephone numbers, or any other personally identifiable information about themselves, other students, or colleagues in their communications. 10 - Students must not use their computers during assemblies or special events. 11 - Users are to assume that other users’ information is private property and treat it accordingly. Password sharing is prohibited. Students must not let anyone else use their account except for purposes of technical support by an authorized technician. They should not attempt to access folders, directories, or network resources that are not designated for their use. When leaving their computer for an extended period of time, students should log out or shut down.
The use of the laptop and the Internet is a privilege - NOT a right - and inappropriate use will result in the cancellation of this privilege. The school administration, staff and faculty will decide what measures will be taken for inappropriate use and their decision is final.
